Empowering Educators with Generative AI: A Practical Approach

This workshop, "Empowering Educators with Generative AI," provides teachers with the knowledge and practical skills to ethically integrate generative AI tools into their teaching. It addresses navigating the evolving AI landscape, turning challenges into opportunities for enhanced learning and streamlined workflows.

Topics include comparing AI tools, mastering prompt engineering, addressing AI misuse, and establishing classroom AI policies. We also cover introducing AI to students and parents and fostering critical thinking alongside AI.

Participants will engage in a hands-on "Prompt Engineering Challenge." In small groups, attendees will craft and refine prompts for a generative AI tool based on common teaching scenarios. We'll collectively analyse outputs, discussing optimization and ethical considerations for immediate, practical application.

Scott Giles is a passionate educator, entrepreneur, and advocate for technology in South African education. Driven by a desire to influence classrooms beyond his own, he founded the Technology Training Academy. This initiative provides SACE accredited professional development to teachers, covering technology integration, pedagogy, and classroom tools to Empower teachers, including AI.

Expanding his impact by introducing the Kiddiengineer, Coding and Robotics Extra-mural into South Africa, being the first to import the BBC micro:bit. Starting with 46 students in 2018, it now serves over 350 face-to-face clients and offers an online version for broader accessibility.

Scott is dedicated to providing teachers with crucial Continuous Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) in order to Empower themselves. He also balances his professional life with his love for his family and sport, including the Empower 5 Challenge, which get sponsors for teachers to access online CPTD at course.after-school.co.za through him doing triathlon and Ironman.
