Exploring Our Understanding of Assessment

Jacob Tripp

Jacob Tripp’s Master’s research explores formative assessment in Mathematics within a progressive South African school that has abandoned traditional tests and graded marks entirely. In this innovative model, teachers rely on in-class activities, continuous observation and criterion-based analysis to map student growth and share feedback which holds them accountable. Compared to traditional assessment tools, this approach offers fresh insights into how feedback, responsive teaching and learner agency can transform classrooms. Jacob’s study uncovers curious and thought-provoking findings while opening new avenues for reimagining assessment in South Africa.
