How Does Using the Well-Formed Outcome Neuro-Linguistic Programming Goal Setting Tool Strengthen Collaborative Problem Solving Amongst Girls in a Grade 9 Natural Sciences Class?

Carmen Rose Els

This presentation shares findings from an action research project conducted through the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS) Global Action Research Collaborative. The study examined how the Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Well Formed Outcome (WFO) framework—traditionally an individual tool used in corporate settings—was adapted for group work in a school context, a first documented application of its kind. Over eight weeks, fifteen Grade 9 students at St Mary’s School, Waverley, completed a Natural Sciences project designing parachutes from recycled materials. Teams were intentionally formed using TypeFinder® and DISC personality profiling to encourage diversity. The adapted WFO process guided goal setting, self reflection, and constructive collaboration. Key outcomes included increased self awareness, empathy, appreciation for diverse perspectives, respectful communication, and stronger teamwork. The research demonstrates how values based frameworks can build critical 21st century skills, while showcasing the potential of action research to bridge theory and practice for deeper student engagement.
