Sue Pilkington-Williams
Head of School, Redhill Early Learning Centre
Sue Pilkington-Williams, Head of Redhill School Early Learning Centre, has dedicated years to Early Childhood Education, focusing on teaching methodologies, global trends, and best practices tailored to the South African context.
Six years ago, upon joining Redhill, Sue collaborated on a project to build a new Early Learning Centre inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Working alongside architect Asher Marcus, who attended the same Reggio Emilia conference as Sue, they merged their perspectives—Sue adopting an architectural mindset and Asher embracing educational principles. Together, they designed an environment that embodies the concept of the Third Teacher, fostering creativity and learning.
The outdoor park was designed to complement indoor activities, encouraging children to explore and connect with nature, where they thrive with increased motivation and well-being. Sue is proud to be part of a team that thoughtfully designs sensory-rich learning spaces, incorporating elements like lighting, sound, and materials that inspire experimentation and reflection; creating environments that spark curiosity, amazement, and wonder.

Their sphere of operation extends beyond local boundaries, embracing opportunities on both domestic and international platforms.Hubo has completed thousands of square meters of successful communal and education spaces creating next level libraries, art and drama centres, early learning centres, technology hubs and high performance sport and recreation centres.
In 2022, Asher attended the Reggio Emilia International Study Group, which had a profound and lasting impact on his educational philosophy. The Reggio Emilia philosophy, prioritising children as active contributors with their own perspectives and voices, has become a fundamental guide on the design of the space through the use of space as the third teacher. Process plays a pivotal role at Hubo. There is no preconceived idea about the end result. An integral part of our process is ongoing meaningful engagement with leadership, students, teachers and any other stakeholders. The process is creative and collaborative, and our full engagement is what produces the best results.
